I was wandering through the forest simply looking at things when I noticed this old sawn stump. For reasons completely unknown to me, one nearly triangular section of the stump had faded dramatically more than the rest of it. The stump was at least 30 years old, and possibly much older, so presumably all sections had had ample time to fade out - so I'm still unclear as to what produced this pattern. But the contrast it produced, in conjunction with the dark black crack lines, definitely attracted my eyes. A dramatic image? Definitely not. But somehow visually interesting...

Nikon D200 with Nikon AF-S Micro 105 mm f/2.8 ED-IF N VR lens (157 mm equivalent with digital conversion factor) supported on Gitzo G1228 Mk2 Mountaineer carbon fibre tripod with Acratech Ultimate ballhead. VR turned on.

1/350s @ f5; -0.67 stop compensation from matrix-metered exposure setting.
